Yes, we need research, both academic and scientific. We need studies of the efforts we've made, according to sound principles.

Before any of that to be useful, we need to develop a collective growth mindset.

For the first few decades of my career, I was a firefighter. While we firefighters spent countless hours improving our individual and team skills, we invested very little time and effort into reducing fire risk in our communities. What we did was find new and improved ways to do the same response work. Finally, community risk reduction is starting to happen, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and a few other locations.

We need to embrace the prevention, protection, and mitigation mission areas in our portfolio of effort, working to reduce risk, and measuring that risk and reward.

How can we work together to increase the amount, value, and use of research?
