I read and use the ideas of great thinkers to help shape my goals and perspectives in emergency management. Reading, putting into practice, and building upon philosophy makes me a better person and a more effective emergency manager. My inspiration for today’s piece is how we look at ourselves and our impact on people’s lives. Unlike those in the field—the firefighter, the police officer, the emergency room RN or MD—our impact may not be as direct. Yet, in many ways, our influence goes far beyond immediate actions. We help the people we serve not to become victims but to avoid tragedy altogether.
