As emergency managers, our profession demands adaptability, strategic thinking, and the ability to communicate effectively in high-pressure situations. Reading is one of the most powerful ways to gain these skills. For years, I’ve championed creating a reading tradition for emergency management professionals, inspired by a practice that profoundly shaped my approach to leadership and learning.
This tradition began during my time as a corpsman with the Marines. Each year, the Commandant of the Marine Corps released a list of recommended books, and every Marine was expected to read at least five books from this list. The books ranged from historical accounts to leadership guides, instilling a deep understanding of strategy, teamwork, and resilience. This reading practice wasn’t just about personal growth—it was about building a collective mindset and preparing for the challenges we might face.
When transitioning into emergency management, I carried this tradition with me, sharing it with my students at a local community college. Each year, I would compile a list of books tailored to the skills and mindset we need in this field, encouraging my students to broaden their perspectives and think critically. I’ve continued and expanded this tradition, now challenging all emergency managers to embrace it as part of their professional development.
This year, I’m presenting the 2024 Emergency Management Reading List—a book collection that inspires, challenges, and elevates your thinking. These selections are just in time for the holidays, making them perfect gifts for your team, colleagues, or friends. Let’s make 2024 a year of growth and shared learning.
