Avoid Complacency in Resiliency
Boring happens. We get into a rut in our jobs and can do many tasks by rote. GAAP[1], janitorial work, making the widgets, running the cash register – predictable and, if we are honest, comfortably boring. In most cases, complacency feels safe. The job goes forward smoothly, and we get paid every two weeks.
Complacency in any part of your business is dangerous. We all know that, but we also ignore it. A complacent business will fall behind the competition, miss safety cues, and lose valuable people who want more interesting work.
Suppose you see the check engine light come on in your vehicle. In the past, when you took it into the local ‘fix it quick’ shop, they told you the filters were dirty. Once those were changed, the light went off. So this time, you ignore it. And ignore it. And forget about it for months, even though you can see the light. There is a problem right in front of your face, but because it hasn’t caused a problem, you start to see it as a regular part of your dashboard.
